December Uppercase Reveal

Here’s my reveal of the December Uppercase Box. There were some fun goodies here!

This is a notepad for tracking the books you’ve lent to friends! Great for keeping track of all those books you may or may not have floating around your friends.

Here’s a cute pin from Swoon Reads: Shelfies over Selfies!

Of course, I can always use an extra pouch. As Hermione says “When in doubt, go to the library.”

Since I received this box, I keep seeing this book everywhere! I can’t wait to read it. The cover is so beautiful!

Did you get the Uppercase Box too? Have you read Foolish Hearts?

Station Eleven meets The Hunger Games in this ruthless, captivating story of a young woman’s survival in the frozen wilderness of the Yukon after the rest of the world has collapsed.

As the old world dies, we all must choose to become predators. Or become prey.

The old world has been ravaged by war and disease, and as far as Lynn McBride is concerned, her family could be the last one left on earth. For seven years, the McBrides have eked out a meagre existence in the still, white wilderness of the Yukon. But this is not living. This is survival on the brink.

Into this fragile community walk new threats, including the enigmatic fugitive, Jax, who holds secrets about the past and, possibly, keys to a better future. And then there’s Immunity, the pre‑war organization that was supposed to save humankind from the flu. They’re still out there, enforcing order and conducting experiments—but is their work for the good of humankind or is something much more sinister at play? In the face of almost certain extinction, Lynn and her family must learn to hunt as a pack or die alone in the cold.

Breakout debut novelist Tyrell Johnson weaves a captivating tale of humanity stretched far beyond its breaking point, of family and the bonds of love forged when everything else is lost. Reminiscent of Station Eleven and The Hunger Games, this is a classic and enthralling post‑apocalyptic adventure and a celebration of the human spirit.

Review:

This book is a great way to start of the new year! It’s a cross between the Hunger Games, Station Eleven, and even a bit of The Maze Runner.

I love dystopia stories. Some seem so realistic, especially with the way the world is going these days. In this story, there has been nuclear war that destroyed a lot of the world. Asia was decimated by the Asian flu, which eventually made its way to North America. This future is terrifying, but unfortunately it is believable.

I loved the character of Lynn. She’s conflicted and takes chances but she sticks with her decisions. This doesn’t always have the best outcomes, but it made the story thrilling and unpredictable.

Also, while I’ve been reading this story, the weather in Toronto has been breaking records for how cold it is. This has nothing to do with the story, but it made me sympathize with the cold Yukon environment that the characters were experiencing. It really set the scene.

From the ending of the story, I hope there will be more to come. I’ll definitely be looking for it!

Review: This Is Not a Spectacle

Title: This Is Not a Spectacle
Author: Isabelle Kenyon
Genre: Poetry
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Source: Author
Release Date: September 4, 2017
Rating: ★★★★

goodreads-badge-add-plus-71eae69ca0307d077df66a58ec068898Goodreads Synopsis:

The extended version of This Is Not a Spectacle explores human curiosity towards strangers and investigates where curiosity becomes fascination with another’s grief or misfortune from afar.

Split into six sections, the poems range from my experiences of a car accident, my own fascination of others and strangers’ impressions of me.

It is an expression of anger from those who least want to be stared at and be put on display.

Review:

I have never been a big fan of poetry. But when Isabelle Kenyon approached me to review her poetry collection I decided to give it a try, and it was very good.

The poems are powerful and moving. They are divided into sections such as Homeless, The Care Home, and Hospital Rooms. They are all subjects that we can relate to, but are difficult to discuss.

A couple of poems really stood out to me. “Raised by the Internet” is about what people post on social media. The things that people post make us think we should behave the same way. The final line was the powerful: “Internet trends do not correspond to real friends.”

“Family member in fur” is another poem that was important to me. It’s about losing a pet. I have experienced that before, and I will again one day. It’s never easy to lose a pet because it’s like losing a child. But the poem described it well.

I really enjoyed this poetry collection and I recommend it to poetry fans and newcomers alike!

2017 Wrap up

This was my first year of blogging, and I absolutely loved it! I’m so glad that I have been able to get to know so many of my fellow bloggers. I really feel at home in the book blogging community.

So here’s my year of books, according to Goodreads:

Screen Shot 2017-12-31 at 1.13.56 PM

Screen Shot 2017-12-31 at 1.14.15 PMScreen Shot 2017-12-31 at 1.14.28 PM

So I read 290 books… yes that’s a lot!
And what may be even crazier is that I’m going to make my reading goal 300 for 2018. Since I review a book everyday, I’m always reading. But I love it so it isn’t a chore for me. And since I almost made it to 300 books with just blogging for the past 8 months, I should be able to reach that goal next year.

Another milestone is that my NetGalley approval rating is 74%!
I made a goal to get it to 80% by January 1, 2018, but I wasn’t able to reach that. However, I made a lot of progress on that goal through December, because my rating was at 60% at the beginning of December. Hopefully I will be able to get to 80% by my birthday (February 22).

Now for some blogging stats:

My most viewed post was my Blogmas – Day 1 post.

My most viewed review was Jane Eyre (Manga Classic). This really surprised me! I didn’t expect this one to be my most viewed review.

As of writing this post, I have 431 followers! Thank you so much to everyone who has followed my blog. I appreciate all of you! I’m planning on doing a giveaway when I reach 500 followers, so hopefully that will happen in the near future!

I have had a fabulous year of reading and blogging! I hope you have too!

Thanks for reading!

Happy New Year and All the Best in 2018!!!

Review: The Christmas Holiday

Title: The Christmas Holiday
Author: Maxine Morrey
Genre: Fiction
Publisher: HQ Digital
Source: NetGalley
Release Date: September 22, 2017
Rating: ★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Fall in love this winter on a romantic trip around the world ending in a fairy-tale winter wedding!

As winter comes to London, journalist Mia Walker is desperately hoping for her big break as a travel writer, dreaming of exotic locations and sun-soaked beaches. When she’s invited to write a romantic travel piece that ends in a huge winter wedding in London, she jumps at the chance. The only trouble is, the photographer is renowned adventure-junkie Hunter Scott, who Mia last saw five years ago when she ended their engagement.

It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, and Mia knows she’d be mad to say no – even if it does mean spending weeks travelling round the world with the one man she never wanted to see again! But as the wedding approaches, and the magic of Christmas begins to take hold, Mia can’t help looking out for mistletoe – and wishing she hadn’t cancelled her own engagement after all…

Review:

This is a unique romantic comedy.

The dynamic of Mia and Hunter’s former relationship was quite funny at times. They bickered like an old married couple, though they don’t want to get back together. We also don’t learn about what ended their engagement for a long time, which keeps their relationship intriguing.

The way that Mia and Hunter go on a trip with Olivia and her fiancé around the world was unusual but entertaining. I didn’t really get why they had to document the trip in that way. It was a nice way to showcase different parts of the world in the story, but I didn’t see it as a realistic trip.

Some parts were glossed over when they should have been described in detail. For example, Mia gets injured on one of their excursions but it isn’t described. Yet, other activities where nothing exciting happens are told in the story. There should have been more action in the scenes where they did activities and travelled.

I think the story could have been given a better name. Olivia and Sandeep are having a Christmas themed wedding, but that’s the only Christmas thing about the book. It takes place in the winter, but since Christmas doesn’t play an important role throughout the whole story, I don’t think it should be in the title.

Overall, this is a cute and funny story.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Two weeks in New York City should be the time of Pippa’s life: she’s attending the prestigious Tisch Photography Camp, her boyfriend, Dylan McCutter (two months and counting!) is coming with her, and their parents are 500 miles away. Talk about lights, camera, (swoony, unchaperoned) action! But what should be 14 unforgettable days of bliss turns into chaos when her one and only nemesis, Ben Baxter, proves to be surprisingly more complex than she could’ve ever imagined, and her Tisch mentor, a renowned photographer, seems to have a lot more to do with her parents’ past than anyone wants her to know. Is Pippa out of her depth?

Picking up where she left off in The Rule of Thirds, Pippa Greene returns in Depth of Field, in a story full of the same heart, comedic touches, and romance that made readers fall in love with Chantel Guertin’s charming YA series.

Review:

Here’s another great book in the Pippa Greene series!

I loved that this story took place in New York. It gives a different side to Pippa, since she is out of her high school. The dynamic of her, Dylan and Ben continues since they all go to New York. And their love triangle also carries on. These characters are realistic and relatable.

I like the backdrop of photography in these stories. I have learned so much about photography, which I wouldn’t have known otherwise. Pippa made me want to pick up a camera and enter some photography contests!

There were some surprising twists in this story. An important part of Pippa’s family history was revealed, which was shocking! I couldn’t have guessed what was going to happen.

I’m so excited to read the next book in the series!
