Review: Little Secrets

Rating: ★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

What happens when ambition trumps the truth?

A town reeling in the wake of tragedy

An arsonist is on the loose in Colmstock, Australia, most recently burning down the town’s courthouse and killing a young boy who was trapped inside..

An aspiring journalist desperate for a story

The clock is ticking for Rose Blakey. With nothing but rejections from newspapers piling up, her job pulling beers for cops at the local tavern isn’t nearly enough to cover rent. Rose needs a story-a big one.

Little dolls full of secrets

In the weeks after the courthouse fire, precise porcelain replicas of Colmstock’s daughters begin turning up on doorsteps, terrifying parents and testing the limits of the town’s already fractured police force.

Rose may have finally found her story. But as her articles gain traction and the boundaries of her investigation blur, Colmstock is seized by a seething paranoia. Soon, no one is safe from suspicion. And when Rose’s attention turns to the mysterious stranger living in the rooms behind the tavern, neighbor turns on neighbor and the darkest side of self-preservation is revealed.

Review:

I really liked the beginning of this story. It was so creepy when the little girls in the town started to receive dolls that looked exactly like them.

I wish the story of the dolls was more prominent. I liked that idea but it really took a backseat to everything else that was happening.

I didn’t feel a connection with any of the characters. I felt that none of them had anything positive going for them. Things just kept getting worse for everyone. Even when Rose had her articles published, she still wasn’t happy.

I expected this story to be more suspenseful. Perhaps if the setting wasn’t so depressing, it would have made the story a little brighter. Everything seemed so run down, from the town to the characters, so I didn’t have anything positive to look forward to reading.

Synopsis:

Secrets on your doorstep don’t stay secret for long… A romantic comedy perfect for fans of Debbie Johnson and Holly Martin.

When Daniele Bracci – a musician at Rome’s Opera Theatre arrives at his new apartment, he is surprised by the warm welcome he receives from his neighbours. Giovanna however, is more preoccupied with introducing him to her daughter Anita. But what she doesn’t know is that for the last two years, Anita has been secretly seeing someone else.

When Anita is introduced to the new tenant, she has the shock of her life – Daniele was Anita’s first love at high school. Can she come to terms with the terrible way things ended between them?

Anita isn’t the only one with something to hide… and none of these secrets go unnoticed by Pina, the apartment gossip who writes everything down in her secret diary…

Review:

This story is very fast paced. A lot happens in a short period of time. It was also fairly short, so I read it in just a few hours.

I liked the diverse backgrounds in this story. Though most of the characters are Italian, Anita’s boyfriend is Japanese. This brought different ethnic groups into the story. They would also eat at restaurants that had culturally different foods, such as Japanese or Medeterranian restaurants.

One thing that I thought could be improved was the dialogue. Sometimes the characters had a conversation that described something that they already knew. It was unrealistic, since it was only there to give information to the reader.

The voices of the characters sounded the same, so I would get confused about who was speaking in the middle of the dialogue, since they didn’t sound distinct. Also, there was a lot of thinking out loud, which were thoughts in quotation marks, so I would get that mixed up with dialogue.

I would have liked to see more diary entries from Pina. She’s a funny character, because she’s so nosy. It would have been nice to see more from her perspective.

This was an interesting story, but I think it could have been polished to be more successful.

First Lines Friday #8

This is a weekly meme hosted by Wandering Words, where you give the first few lines of a book to hook your readers before introducing the book.

Here are my first lines:

“It wasn’t a very likely place for disappearances, at least at first glance. Mrs. Baird’s was like a thousand other Highland bed-and-breakfast establishments in 1945; clean and quiet, with fading floral wallpaper, gleaming floors, and a coin-operated hot-water geyser in the lavatory.”

Do you recognize these first lines?

And the book is… Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

img_9388

Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

I love this series! I still have a long way to go to finish all the books, because they are so long and are a big commitment, but they’re so good! Have you read it?

Review: Harley Quinn, Vol. 1: Hot in the City

Title: Harley Quinn, Vol. 1: Hot in the City
Author: Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti
Genre: Graphic Novel
Publisher: DC Comics
Source: Purchased
Release Date: October 28, 2014
Rating: ★★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Fresh from BATMAN: DEATH OF THE FAMILY and SUICIDE SQUAD, Harley Quinn returns to her first solo series in the New 52! The writing team of Jimmy Palmiotti (ALL STAR WESTERN) and Amanda Conner (BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE) unleashed Harley on an unsuspecting DC Universe, as she encounters various heroes and villains … and leaves no one unscathed in her wake! With art by Chad Hardin and a slew of comics’ best artists including Darwyn Cooke, Sam Kieth, Tony S. Daniel, Paul Pope, Walter Simonson and Art Baltazar!

Collects HARLEY QUINN #0-8.

Review:

Since I’ve been reading the Harley Quinn Rebirth series, I decided to venture into the previous Harley series.

This first volume introduced many of the people and things that are in the latest Harley series. For example, we get to see the creation of the “scatapult,” and how Harley became the landlord of the building.

I loved the first issue in the collection! Harley decides that she wants to have her own comic book (how original!). The creators, Amanda and Jimmy, give her some ideas of how different artists would draw her. Almost every page is drawn by a different DC artist, with Harley in many different situations. It was so cool to see Harley interact with the writers and artists of the graphic novels.

I also liked it when Harley got a job at a nursing home as a psychologist. I could relate to this storyline because my grandmother is in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s disease. There was a twist at the end of that storyline that made me laugh, and I could totally believe it from my experiences.

I have the next volume of Harley Quinn lined up to read soon! I can’t wait to read more of her adventures.

*Shortlisted for the RNA Contemporary Romantic Novel of the Year 2014*

This book was previously published as A Bridge Over The Atlantic.

Review:

This was a very emotional story to read.

I liked the way the characters were introduced before any big things happened in the plot. I felt really connected to them right away. I also loved the Canadian connections in the story!

At times I felt that everything was going too perfectly, when everything fell into place for Mallory. However, not everything went as she had planned, and she does have to face hardships. When things went perfectly, I didn’t think the story was realistic enough, such as her relationship with Sam’s family. But at the same time, the difficult sides to a relationship were displayed from Greg’s point of view, which balanced it out.

I loved this book! It is truly a heart wrenching read.

Blog Tour: The Accident

Title: The Accident
Author: Dawn Goodwin
Genre: Fiction
Publisher: Aria
Source: NetGalley
Release Date: October 1, 2017
Rating: ★★★★

Synopsis:

A tragic accident, an unbearable loss and a marriage in crisis – but who can she trust or is she all alone? A gripping, debut psychological thriller that will keep you hooked. Perfect for the fans of Paula Hawkins and S.J. Watson.

Veronica Pullman’s comfortable suburban life comes to a shuddering halt when her young daughter, Grace, tragically dies in a car accident.

Months later, unable to come to terms with her daughter’s death, detached from her husband and alienated from her friends and family, a chance encounter on a rainy street pushes her into an unlikely new friendship.

Scarlet is everything Veronica could’ve been: feisty, adventurous, unpredictable.  But as she approaches what would have been Grace’s 10th birthday, it becomes clear to Veronica that the friendship she thought was saving her life could be costing her everything.

Consumed by grief and left questioning her own sanity, is there anyone she can really trust or is someone out to torment her as part of their twisted game?

Review:

This is another great thriller!

Veronica is an unreliable narrator, which makes her story all the more compelling. It’s difficult to tell when she’s telling the truth. Fairly early on, I could tell that things weren’t adding up, but I couldn’t be sure if I was wrong. There were also hints of someone else playing tricks on her, but it wasn’t clear who it was until the end.

I had figured out everything by the end but it was still an exciting story. Even though I could predict things that needed to be told at the end, I didn’t know how they would come out. (I don’t want to give spoliers but if you read the book, you’ll know what I’m referring to.)

There were clever hints as to what was happening to Veronica. There is one particular flashback to Grace that I really liked.

I enjoyed this story. I recommend it if you want to read a psychological thriller!
