Review:

Molly Gray is now the Head Maid at the Regency Grand Hotel. At an event at the hotel, the famous author J.D. Grimthorpe drops dead, leaving the hotel staff as the prime suspects. However, Molly keeps it a secret that she knew Grimthorpe as a child. To figure out who the killer is, Molly revisits memories of visiting the Grimthorpe mansion with her Gran as a child.

I was so glad to revisit Molly in this story. She’s a unique character who doesn’t understand many social cues, so she’s viewed as “different” by many people she encounters. Despite this, she perseveres and works to solve the murders that occur at the hotel. It was nice to see some of Molly’s memories with Gran, but I would have liked to see the story stay more in the present mystery. The murder mystery was suspenseful, with an ending I didn’t expect.

I hope we get to revisit Molly Gray in the future.

Review:

England, 1602: Queen Elizabeth I is the ruler, and she works with her spies Nicholas Fury and Doctor Strange to uncover a mysterious artifact being sent to England. Fury and Strange also work with Marvel superheroes such as Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and the X-Men to save the world from Doctor Doom and other dangers.

This was a fun adaptation of the Marvel comic characters. They were slightly different without all of their powers in this setting of Elizabethan London, but the characters were the same people. There were a lot of characters to keep track of throughout the story. I liked that even though some seemed to be original characters, they were later revealed to be part of the Marvel universe in disguise.

Marvel 1602 is a fun graphic novel for Marvel fans!

Review:

Missy is planning on causing trouble again, and this time she’s breaking the Master out of prison. She convinces the Master that she’s the Doctor, even though she’s actually a future version of the Master. Together they must travel through time to find a key and defeat the Doctor.

This graphic novel was disappointing. Most of it was Missy bickering with the Master, but they are actually the same person. That was a bit of a time paradox, since she shouldn’t have been able to travel back to her own timeline. They talked about finding a key but that plot wasn’t fully explained, so I was left wondering what happened.

Doctor Who Missy: The Master Plan had potential, but was disappointing.

Review:

Lucy is just starting middle school, where her eighth grader sister GiGi is one of the most popular girls. They never really got along, and since their dad died, they fight all the time. The only think they have in common is that they like fencing, which their father taught them. After an argument in the cafeteria on the first day of school, Lucy and GiGi decide to have a fencing duel to end their fighting. They have to keep the duel a secret from their mom, who doesn’t want them to fight anymore. The whole school gets in on the duel, supporting one sister or the other. Since both sisters are determined to win, this duel may completely destroy what relationship they have left.

This is the first book I’ve read about fencing, and it was so fun. Each chapter began with defining a term used in fencing. I didn’t know much about fencing before reading this story so I really enjoyed learning about it. Lucy and GiGi were sisters who fought all the time about everything. I find in a lot of books, sisters are best friends, so it was a different, and realistic, take to see sisters who didn’t get along.

Duel is a great middle grade graphic novel!

Review:

Momo Gardner has always been eager to help, especially when it comes to girls she has a crush on. She may be too trusting sometimes but she tries to see the best in people. When she meets PG, she has an instant crush. The problem is that PG is known as being a player, like other girls who have used Momo in the past. When they keep running into each other, they decide to start hanging out and develop a friendship. However, Momo’s friends have to warn her that PG has a bad reputation and she may just be using Momo like girls in the past. Momo has to decide if she’s willing to risk her heart for PG.

This was an adorable graphic novel. Momo was sweet, innocent, and relatable. She could be a little naive when it came to falling for the wrong kind of girl, but that added to her charm. Though PG had a reputation as being a player, there was more to her than that. They made a cute couple, and I was rooting for them the whole time!

Review:

On Halloween night, a group of four teens decide to explore a graveyard. They come across a mausoleum which has a giant puppet inside. He comes to life and sends them to another dimension called the Confetti Realms. He gives them the task of finding him five teeth from various creatures throughout the realm. If they find them all before that night, he will send them back home. However, as the night goes on, each of the friends realize that if they stay in the confetti realm, they won’t have to face their problems at home, so they must decide if they will stay or go back.

This story had lots of queer representation. It had a spooky atmosphere which is perfect for this time of year! The creatures they encountered were fun and entertaining. I laughed a few times while reading this graphic novel. I would have liked the ending to be less open ended because I like the closure of knowing exactly what happened.

Confetti Realms is a great Halloween graphic novel!

Review:

Dead End, the haunted house at Phoenix Parks, was rebuilt after the tragic end of The Watcher’s Test. Norma can now split into a ghost and her relationship with Barney is still rocky. Barney isn’t ready to return to Phoenix Park yet, but he becomes a fighter in the Demon Wrestling Federation which earns him a lot of money. His success comes to a crashing halt when he’s set up for a dangerous fight. Norma, Barney, and their other friends must reunite to save the multi-planes of angels and demons.

This was a great second book in the DeadEndia series. I really liked seeing the characters again. Barney is trans, but that wasn’t as big of a plot point in this book as in the first. When the story went to the multi-planes and the battles between the angels and demons, the story drifted away from the main plot of Barney and Norma dealing with demons at the haunted house. I would have liked to see more of the fun stories that were in the first book. However, I loved the cliffhanger ending. I hope there will be another book in the series!

Review:

Nayra Mansour is under pressure from her family to do well at school, but her family doesn’t know how much she is bullied for being Muslim. She is friends with the only other Muslim girl at school, Rami, but that friendship isn’t strong enough to make Nayra feel better. While Nayra is considering transferring to a different school, a Djinn, a mythical creature in Islamic folklore, appears before her. The Djinn has run away from their home, but they want to help Nayra with her problems. Nayra has to figure out how to solve her problems with the help of the Djinn.

This was a great middle grade graphic novel! Nayra experienced a lot of racism and Islamophobia from her classmates. There was one girl who would call her names, even when Nayra asked her to stop. Nayra had to figure out a way to connect with the bully in order to get her to stop. It was sad to see her treated like that. Throughout the story, Nayra was fasting for Ramadan, but her classmates didn’t understand that so they made fun of her. If more people can understand and be empathetic to people from different backgrounds, there may be less racism in the world. It’s important for children to read stories like this one to see the harm that can come from bullying and racism.

Nayra and the Djinn is a great middle grade graphic novel!

Barney Guttman’s parents aren’t completely accepting his trans identity, so when he gets a job at a haunted house in an amusement park, he leaves home and moves in there. Barney is working with his best friend Norma and he brought his dog Pugsley to live with him too. He soon discovers that this haunted house contains a portal to Hell. A demonic ambassador named Courtney invited a demon king to Earth which sets off several events including giving Pugsley the ability to speak and do magic. The group of friends go on a series of adventures throughout the amusement park to save Earth.

This was a hilarious and entertaining graphic novel with some serious moments too. I liked how the story focused on Barney’s present. Since his parents weren’t accepting his trans identity, they didn’t take up space on the page other than him mentioning them a few times. The other characters were fun and diverse. The characters were well developed right from the first page, so the story could focus on the events happening at the amusement park. This is also a beautifully illustrated graphic novel!

That plus Rick Stromoski’s lush, illustrative style and charming character designs make for page-turning, chuckle-filled reading.

Review:

Schnozzer and Tatertoes are two dog friends who live together. After a game of “Mother May I,” Schnozzer realizes he doesn’t have any memories of his mom. They decide to go to the farm where Schnozzer was born to find his mom. Along the way, they meet fairytale characters, like Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks, and creatures like “nose spiders” and “a log with a face” in the water. They have a entertaining journey to find Schnozzer’s mom.

This was an adorable children’s graphic novel! Schnozzer is a cheerful and naive dog, while Tatertoes is more logical. There were jokes that will make kids and adults laugh. The illustrations were beautiful and expressive too. I liked the inclusion of familiar fairy tale characters. It made the story relatable, since they were characters I already know.

Schnozzer and Tatertoes Take a Hike is a great children’s graphic novel!
