Soon Val and her friends find themselves caught up in a movement with other girls also starting bands—also finding their voice. Collectively, these “riot grrrls” discover that their songs ring out loud and powerful, and for Val, there’s no going back.

Review:

Val is a girl from a conservative background who has always wanted to be a ballerina. When her ballet teacher tells her she needs to lose weight, she suggests she start smoking. Val gets the cigarettes from Kat, who becomes her new friend. Kat introduces Val to punk rock. They form a band called The Proper Ladies, and Val’s life is changed forever.

This was a great story about girl power. Val gained confidence from performing in her band. She had been restricted and limited in what she was allowed to do when she was a dancer. With punk rock, she could make the rules and become her true self.

A trigger warning for this book is eating disorders. It was disturbing to see how Val’s teacher told her and other dancers to lose weight any way they could. That included taking up smoking cigarettes. Some of them developed eating disorders. I was glad to see Val take up music so she could develop a healthy body image.

This is a great punk rock graphic novel.

‘Waiting on’ Wednesday – September 16

Review:

Hara Isari is an aspiring sports journalist. She gets the chance of a lifetime when she is chosen to interview the elusive Charles Butler, a rising basketball star. When she travels to Boston to meet Butler, she also meets his best friend, Derek Darcy. They instantly can’t stand each other, but they keep getting pushed together as Hara follows the team to research her article. Soon Hara realizes there is a dark secret between Butler and Darcy, and she won’t stop investigating until she figures it out.

This story followed the general “enemies to lovers” plot of Pride and Prejudice, with Hara and Darcy not liking each other but slowly starting to fall in love. However, the other subplots of Pride and Prejudice were changed. Hara’s father was in prison, not a steady role model like Mr. Bennet was to Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice. Butler was hiding some scandalous secrets, such as cheating on his girlfriend. I can’t imagine Bingley from Pride and Prejudice ever doing anything like that. I was disappointed that the original characters were changed so much in this adaptation.

There were some dramatic scenes at the end of the book. There are also some trigger warnings, such as suicide, abortion, murder, and assault. These events seemed to be just thrown into the story for a shock effect. These things didn’t add to the plot, and they didn’t make sense for a Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

This book didn’t work for me.

Review:

Everly Morrow has lived her whole life in the mortal world with her sister and mother. One day, she begins to see something in the mirror, which is her special magical ability. Everly is actually from a fairy tale world, Enchantia, where she is fated to play a role in the fairy tale of Snow White and the Evil Queen. Everly has to travel to Enchantia to fulfill her part in the prophecy, but no one knows which role they are supposed to play. They have to figure out who will be Snow White, Prince Charming, and the Evil Queen.

This was an exciting twist on the fairy tale adaptation. It wasn’t clear which character was playing which role in the Snow White fairy tale. At different parts of the story, any of the characters could be either Snow White, the Huntsman, Prince Charming, or the Evil Queen. This was a clever way to keep the reader guessing until the end.

This story was a little long and complicated at times. It got confusing when the roles in the Snow White kept changing, though it kept me wondering who was going to eventually fulfill each role. Some of the scenes were repetitive, such as when they traveled in the forest. The same things kept happening to the characters in the forest, like being chased by different creatures and bathing in the lake. I think some of these parts could have been condensed to make the story more fast paced.

I really enjoyed this fairy tale story. I’m excited to read the next one!
