Goodreads Synopsis:

A graphic novel adventure in which two siblings, a mysterious Night Librarian, and a motley cast of book characters try to save the New York Public Library

Twins Page and Turner know about the magic a library holds—they’ve been going to their beloved New York City public library for years, especially since their parents are always traveling for work. But a secret mission involving their dad’s rare and valuable edition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula uncovers a world they’ve never known, featuring a mysterious Night Librarian, famous heroes (and villains) that have broken free from classic books, and an epic battle to save the library from total destruction.

Review:

Twins Page and Turner Reed feel neglected by their parents who are always traveling for work. Their father’s most prized possession is a first edition of Dracula. When their parents are away, they take the book to the New York Public Library to try to find out what it’s worth, but the book disappears while they’re there. They meet the Night Librarian, who looks after the library during the night when the books come to life. Page and Turner must work with some of their favourite book characters to find Dracula and save the library from being destroyed.

This was such a fun graphic novel! I think many kids dream of entering their favourite stories or becoming friends with their favourite characters. Page and Turner met Alice in Wonderland, Tinkerbell, and Jack from Jack in the Beanstalk. Meeting these characters in this contemporary story is a great way to introduce young readers to classic stories.

The Night Librarian is a fun middle grade graphic novel!

Goodreads Synopsis:

The much-anticipated new fantasy series from Ransom Riggs, his first since introducing the #1 global phenomenon Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series.

Seventeen-year-old Leopold Berry is seeing weird things around Los Angeles. A man who pops a tooth into a parking meter. A glowing trapdoor in a parking lot. A half-mechanical raccoon with its tail on fire that just won’t leave him alone. Every hallucinatory moment seems plucked from a cheesy 1990s fantasy TV show called Max’s Adventures in Sunderworld—and that’s because they are.

Not a good sign.

In the blurry weeks after his mother’s death, a young Leopold discovered VHS tapes of its one and only season in a box headed for the trash—and soon became obsessed. Losing himself in Sunder was the best way to avoid two things: grieving his mother and being a chronic disappointment to his overbearing father. But when the strange visions return—at the worst possible time on the worst possible day—Leopold turns to his best friend Emmet for help. Together they discover that Sunder is much more than just an old TV show, and that Los Angeles is far stranger than they ever imagined. And soon, he’ll realize that not only is Sunderworld real, but it’s in grave danger.

Certain he’s finally been chosen for greatness, Leopold risks everything to claim his destiny, save the world of his childhood dreams, and prove once and for all that he’s not the disappointment his father believes him to be. But when everything goes terribly, horribly, excruciatingly wrong, Leopold’s disappointments prove to be more extraordinary than he ever could have imagined.

How do you battle darkness when no one believes in you—not even yourself?

Visionary storyteller Ransom Riggs weaves the familiar with the peculiar in a stunning loss, triumph, friendship and magic, reminding readers everywhere that true heroes are made, not born—and that when you’re never the chosen one, sometimes you have to choose yourself.

Welcome to Sunderworld.

Review:

Seventeen-year-old Leopold Berry keeps seeing strange things around Los Angeles. He saw a raccoon on fire and a man who opened a portal from a parking meter. All of these strange sights come from Sunderworld, a 90s TV show. Leopold became obsessed with Sunderworld after finding the VHS tapes in his mother’s belongings after she died. When Leopold asks his friend Emmet for help with these visions, they discover that Sunderworld is a real place. They travel there together, which seems like a dream come true for Leopold, but everything goes wrong. It isn’t the place that Leopold expected, and he ends up running for his life and discovering secrets about his past.

I was so excited when I heard about this book! It lived up to my expectations. It was fast paced and exciting. The story reminded me of the Miss Peregrine series, but it was a different story. There were some great mysteries set up that I’m sure will be explored in future books.

Sunderworld, Vol. 1: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry is a great start to a new series!

Goodreads Synopsis:

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Casey McQuiston’s latest romantic comedy, two bisexual exes accidentally book the same European food and wine tour and challenge each other to a hookup competition to prove they’re over each other—except they’re definitely not.

Theo and Kit have been a lot of things: childhood best friends, crushes, in love, and now estranged exes. After a brutal breakup on the transatlantic flight to their dream European food and wine tour, they exited each other’s lives once and for all.

Time apart has done them good. Theo has found confidence as a hustling bartender by night and aspiring sommelier by day, with a long roster of casual lovers. Kit, who never returned to America, graduated as the reigning sex god of his pastry school class and now bakes at one of the finest restaurants in Paris. Sure, nothing really compares to what they had, and life stretches out long and lonely ahead of them, but—yeah. It’s in the past.

All that remains is the unused voucher for the European tour that never happened, good for 48 months after its original date and about to expire. Four years later, it seems like a great idea to finally take the trip. Solo. Separately.

It’s not until they board the tour bus that they discover they’ve both accidentally had the exact same idea, and now they’re trapped with each other for three weeks of stunning views, luscious flavors, and the most romantic cities of France, Spain, and Italy. It’s fine. There’s nothing left between them. So much nothing that, when Theo suggests a friendly wager to see who can sleep with their hot Italian tour guide first, Kit is totally game. And why stop there? Why not a full-on European hookup competition?

But sometimes a taste of everything only makes you crave what you can’t have.

Review:

Theo and Kit were childhood best friends and eventually became partners when they finally acknowledged their feelings for each other. Then they had a sudden break up on a plane to Europe and they didn’t see each other again. Now, it’s four years later, and Theo has decided to use the tickets for a European food and drink tour that they were meant to take together just before they broke up. When she gets on the bus in London, Kit is sitting there. Kit also had the same idea to use the tour tickets before they expired, so Kit and Theo are stuck on the tour together for three weeks. Neither one of them wants to acknowledge their lingering feelings for each other, so they decide to have a competition to see who can hook up with the most people on the tour. However, it isn’t easy seeing the person you love with other people. Theo and Kit must decide if they confront these feelings or continue with their single lives.

This book is the perfect summer read! I felt like I had traveled on this trip with Theo and Kit because it was so descriptive. They had a lot of delicious food and drinks, which made me so hungry while reading. It was also quite a steamy read. Both Kit and Theo were bisexual and hooked up with men and women. There was also some nonbinary representation, as one of the characters was still learning how they felt in their body.

The Pairing is a great summer read!

Goodreads Synopsis:

In a charming new chapter-book series by a social-change advocate, young Frankie emulates her journalist mama by reporting on household news with the help of her sister and an unlikely news crew.

Frankie’s mama is leaving to cover a breaking news story. Frankie, Papa, and Frankie’s teenage sister, Raven, are all proud of Mama, even though they miss her when she’s away. But Frankie has a great idea: she can make her own news show! After all, Mama has told her that news is happening around her all the time. With a little assistance from her friends–including her doll Farrah, Robert the toy robot, and her tabby cat, Nina Simone–Frankie prepares for her first “broadcast.” And when she hears someone crying in the house, she knows that’s the developing story she must cover. With humor, empathy, and imagination, Frankie gets the scoop–and learns that even mature older sisters can miss Mama sometimes. With sweet illustrations throughout, this engaging new series embraces communication and compassion and is a refreshing portrayal of Black women in journalism. Young reporters will learn the terms of the trade, which are clearly presented in the text and reinforced in a glossary at the end of the book.

Review:

Frankie’s mom has to leave home suddenly to cover a breaking news story. Frankie, her sister Raven, and her dad all miss her mom when she travels for work. Frankie decides to create her own news station with her toys including her doll Farrah, toy robot Robert, and cat Nina Simone. When Frankie hears some mysterious crying in her house, she decides to investigate it for her own breaking news story. She discovers that her older sister misses her mom just as much as she does.

This is a great early chapter book. Like Frankie, my dad travelled a lot for work, so I had to get used to that at an early age. I liked how she coped with it by trying to learn more about her mom’s job and making her own newsroom. The story was accompanied by vivid illustrations. I’m excited to read the next book in the series!

Breaking News is a great chapter book for young readers!

Goodreads Synopsis:

Sedona, AZ is a tourist town that lures people from around the world who believe there is more beyond the veil of reality. They come for the whispering pines, Hopi legends, vortices, magic crystals, and healing springs. Enter Cal Novak, a spunky editor from Atlanta, Georgia, who gives up the city life because she is searching for more time, more adventure, more meaning. The magic of her new hometown does not disappoint. Behind the curtain of every window there are secrets waiting to be uncovered. For those searching for more, there’s no place like Sedona.

Review:

Cal Novak moved from her home in Atlanta to Sedona with her grandmother after her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. The climate in Sedona was better for her illness. Cal gets a job as an editor for a magazine about crystals, but it isn’t enough work for her. She also gets a job at a new tourist attraction that’s opening. She is a tour guide that leads groups on hikes around caves and cliffs. However, Cal suspects there’s something strange happening at this new attraction. The owner is suspicious, and almost all of the employees have been brought in from outside of Sedona. Cal decides to investigate to figure out what is happening with this new business.

This was a great, fast paced story. It’s fairly short, under 250 pages, so it was a quick read. I liked how it showcased the culture in Sedona. The town was a big tourist location, so the residents promoted their natural attractions as well as their magic crystals and healing environment. I also liked the mystery that Cal had to solve about what was really going on behind the scenes at her new job.

Sedona is a great, light mystery!

Goodreads Synopsis:

A forbidden affair erupts dramatically amid a decadent Hawaiian wedding in this hilarious, sophisticated, and thrillingly plotted story of love, money, murder, sex—and the lies we tell about them all.

Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel, has a problem: his family fortune, the legendary Gresham Trust, has been depleted by decades of profligate spending. While magazine covers and Instagram stories display impeccably designed manors and shiny new yachts, the secret reality holds nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to seduce a woman with money, thereby securing the family’s precarious financial future.

Should he marry Solène de Courcy, a French hotel heiress with honey-blond tresses and a royal bloodline? Should he pursue Martha Dung, the tattooed venture capital genius who passes out billions like lollipops? Or should he follow his heart, betray his family, squander his legacy, and finally confess his love to the literal girl next door, the humble daughter of a doctor, Eden Tong?

When the Gresham family descends on the Big Island of Hawaii to host a veritable who’s who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs for the wedding of the decade, Rufus must merely flex his famous abs to bewitch the heiress of his choice. But instead a hot mic exposes a secret tryst, a volcanic eruption burns through the nuptials, and the Gresham family’s plans—and their reputation—go up in flames.

Can the once-great earldom rise from the ashes? Or will a secret tragedy, hidden for two decades, reveal a shocking twist? Spanning the black sand beaches of Hawaii, the red city of Marrakech, the Los Angeles bachelor pad of a billionaire playboy, and the inner sanctum of England’s oldest family estate, Lies and Weddings reveals an enthralling family saga that is as scandalous and satirical as it is full of heart.

Review:

Rufus Leung Gresham is the future Earl of Greshambury, but his family’s fortune is quickly disappearing. His mother, Arabella, wants to marry off her three children to rich matches so her style of life can continue. At her daughter’s wedding to a Prince, Arabella is scheming to match Rufus with a wealthy heiress. However, the wedding ends in disaster, and Rufus leaves with his childhood best friend, Eden, instead of the heiress. Arabella will do anything to make her son marry a wealthy woman, including ruining Eden’s life.

This story followed many members of an extended family and their friends. There were three different weddings, and the characters travelled around the world. Each chapter focused on a different character. It was cinematic, because the scenes followed the story, rather than focusing on a single character. I liked that the story followed both the parents and their young adult children. The characters were extremely rich, or acted like they were, which made for some funny moments. Fans of Crazy Rich Asians will love this book!

Lies and Weddings is an entertaining romance!

Goodreads Synopsis:

She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.

Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.

The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.

When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.

Review:

In Ilya, the Elite have been granted extraordinary powers. Those who don’t have those powers are called Ordinary, and they have been banished by the King. Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary, but she’s a clever thief who is able to pose as an Elite with psychic powers. After saving Prince Kai in the city, Paedyn is taken to the palace and sent to the Purging Trials. The trials is a competition that is meant to showcase the powers of the Elite, which Paedyn doesn’t actually have. Paedyn is joined in these trials by Prince Kai who has been trained to enforce the laws for the King and can’t resist being close to Paedyn. She must try to convince everyone she has powers and survive the trial so that her secret isn’t discovered.

This was a great fantasy competition story. There were nods to some classic YA fantasy stories including a love triangle with two princes and a magical hedge maze. I liked that the narrative skipped over transition scenes and showed the important events. Fantasy stories can become tedious if they focus on every small detail but this one kept up a steady pace. I’m excited to read the sequel!

Powerless is a great YA fantasy!

A picture book ode to Christina Rossetti’s classic poem and a clever homage to familiar fairy-tale villains, this story about two sisters will enthrall readers with its beautifully detailed art and enchanting writing.

Millie loves her quiet life on the farm, but Mina longs for adventure. When the Goblin Market comes to town, Millie knows visiting it is a bad idea. They’ve been told stories their whole lives about the dangers of the Goblin Market. But Mina just can’t resist.

When Mina doesn’t come back, it’s Millie’s turn to brave the market to bring her home. She will use all her smarts and courage to try to outwit the goblins and save her sister… but will it be enough?

Review:

Millie and Mina are young sisters who live together on a quiet farm. Millie is happy with their life, but Mina wants to go on an adventure. One night, Millie wakes up to discover that Mina has run away to the Goblin Market. Mille must try to outsmart the goblins to save her sister.

This beautiful picture book is based on Christina Rossetti’s poem Goblin Market. This adaptation was a simpler form of the poem for young children to understand. This book was also not as dark as the original poem. The black, white, and red illustrations that went along with the text were beautiful and detailed.

Into the Goblin Market is a beautiful picture book!
