Six for Sunday – Tropes I Hate

This meme is hosted by Steph at A little but a lot. The weekly prompts for 2019 can be found here.

This week’s prompt is Tropes I Hate. Here’s my list:

1. Token Diversity

2. Protagonist Can’t See Her Beauty

3. Starting a Rebellion

4. Absent Parents (in YA or middle grade)

5. Confused Mother (in thrillers)

6. Damsel in Distress

Did you make a Six for Sunday list?

  1. I don’t think ‘absent parents’ is necessarily a bad thing to include in a book bit it’s definitely way overused. I’d like to see more supportive parents who are trying their best in MG and YA literature, because they’re a rare breed. ‘Protagonist who can’t see her own beauty’ is one of the worst, and I personally think the ‘one-dimensional can-beat-up-all-the-guys martial arts alpha female’ trope is almost as bad as ‘damsel in distress.’ 😛
