He has no voice, or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn’t know the
details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.

Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.

His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.

Until a human kills her…

Sixteen year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx
invade, annihilating entire cities, taking control of the Earth. Isolated in
the wilderness, Raven and her friends have only a fragment of instruction from
the human resistance.

Shelter in place.

Which seems like good advice at first. Stay put. Await rescue. Raven
doesn’t like feeling helpless but what choice does she have?

Then a Nahx kills her boyfriend.

Thrown together in a violent, unfamiliar world, Eighth and Raven should feel
only hate and fear. But when Raven is injured, and Eighth deserts his unit,
their survival comes to depend on trusting each other…

On the run from a trio of brothers who want to resurrect an evil past, the coven will discover their bloodline is old, powerful—and deadly. From high school to hell, follow them as they realize that nothing is harder than being a teenage witch.

Review:

I loved this book! Any book that has a reference to Harry Potter early on is good in my books! (“Turn to page 394.”)

This story was unlike so many YA fantasy stories that are popular today. They often have a girl living in poverty who is suddenly brought to live in a castle (Red Queen, The Selection, Throne of Glass). Though this story is fantasy, it follows a different format.

The pacing of this story was great. The four girls were introduced gradually, so that we get to know them individually. Their story was logical. I had some questions by the end, but this is the first in a series so hopefully they’ll be answered in later books.

I really enjoyed this book! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Check it out and tell me what you think!

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #1

This blog meme is hosted by Book Date.

Well, I was home sick a lot last week so I got a lot of reading done. This week I plan on resting a lot so I have plans to read a book everyday again.

What I just finished:

Yesterday I finished Awakening, the first book in The Last Coven series. It was amazing! I totally recommend it for YA fantasy fans! I read it as part of the blog tour with YA Bound Book Tours. My review will be posted today.

What I’m currently reading:

Today I am reading Masked. This is also for a blog tour with YA Bound Book Tours. Look for my review on Tuesday.

What I’m reading next:

Next I will be reading Young Jane Young. It came out last week. I was so excited when I was approved for this galley on NetGalley. I’ve heard good things about this book. Look for my review on Wednesday.

What are you guys reading this week? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments!

Review: Harley Quinn, Volume 1: Die Laughing

Title: Harley Quinn, Volume 1: Die Laughing
Author: Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti
Genre: Graphic Novel
Publisher: DC Comics
Source: Purchased
Release Date: March 21, 2017
Rating: ★★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Harley Quinn’s crazy world on has gotten even more crazier when an unexpected, contagious enemy comes to town! Protecting her neighborhood just got a little harder, good thing they have chainsaws!

Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti continue their mammoth run on this New York Times best-selling title in Harley Quinn, Volume 1: Die Laughing!

Review:

I loved this graphic novel! This is the first Harley Quinn comic I’ve read. My only experience with her is from the movie Suicide Squad. I loved her in that movie.

Harley is hilarious. I laughed out loud so many times. She’s constantly making mistakes and just throwing herself into the middle of fights without thinking about it first.

The premise for the first couple of comics was so crazy. An alien came to earth and disguised himself as a cow. Then he ended up being processed and turned into hot dogs. Everyone who ate the hot dogs turned into zombies. Of course, they couldn’t find the source of their illness because how would they figure out that they ate an alien in their hot dogs?

There were some graphic images, but they were so extreme that they just seemed ridiculous. It took away from the seriousness of the scene.

I recommend this book if you like graphic novels. This is the first in the series.

Weekly Wrap Up #1

I’m going to add some new daily blog posts of some popular blogging memes. They look like fun, and I’ve enjoyed reading them on other blogs. I’m going to write one everyday here so you guys can get to know me and we can discuss more books!

Well, I’ve been very sick this past week with stomach issues (I had gastroenteritis earlier in the summer and now I have gastritis). I’ve had to miss work and couldn’t leave the house much, but that meant I had lots of time for reading, so my blogging didn’t suffer.

I read 6 Books and reviewed all of them! Here are the links to my reviews:

My favourite book was Never Have I Ever. My least favourite book was Obscured.

What books did you read this week? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments!

Book Blitz and Giveaway: Seven Ways to Lose Your Heart

Seven Ways to Lose Your Heart
Tiffany Truitt
Published by: Entangled Publishing
Publication date: July 18th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance

In the span of seven days, Annabel Lee will lose her heart.

Kennedy Harrison, as reckless with life as Annabel is obsessed with order, never could commit to anything—not to a person, not to a job, not to a path. But he’s got a history with Annabel, and for once Kennedy doesn’t want to run. Determined to spend time with her before she leaves for college, Kennedy dares her to join him on a road trip to a music festival.

And neither of them could ever say no to a dare.

But Annabel’s got a plan. She’ll complete seven dares in seven days—if Kennedy applies for one writing internship per dare. Because Kennedy needs to be pushed just as much as she does.

What follows is a dizzying week of music, shady hotels, comical dares, and a passion neither one knew existed. But when it ends, Annabel and Kennedy will realize the biggest dare of all might just be falling for each other.

EXCERPT:

“You haven’t drowned in there, have you?” I yell to Annabel, noting that the sound of running water stopped about fifteen minutes ago.

“No, just relaxing,” she calls back.

Just relaxing. Naked. In a bath.

I scramble from the bed and knock gently on the door. “And would you like some company to help you, you know, relax?”

“Did you finish?” She sounds more like a scolding teacher than the girl who ravished me last night. But this is Annabel Lee we’re talking about. It’s all about priorities.

“Yes, I finished. Now, can I come in?” I ask, pulling off my shirt in anticipation.

“Read it to me.”

“Huh?” I ask, my shirt not completely removed from my head yet.

“I want you to read it to me.”

Of course she does. Why did I expect any less? I pull my shirt the rest of the way off on my walk back to get my computer. When I go to open the door, her voice halts me.

“I didn’t say come in. I said I wanted you to read it to me.”

“And may I come in when I’m done?”

“Only if it’s good,” she sings. She’s enjoying every bit of this torture. The lovable vixen.

And so I read it to her sitting on the floor outside the bathroom door. Even I have to admit it’s good. It’s, like, fucking fantastic. When I get to the part about us dancing up there together, the whole crowd making us feel like gods, she makes me read it again, and I smile knowing it meant as much to her as it did to me.

“You can come in now if you want,” she says, sounding a little shyer than I expected to hear. Gone is the bravado of the schoolteacher, replaced again by the girl who still doesn’t know the power she has over me. How does she not realize she’s had power over me since that first dare when she made me switch out Mrs. Peterson’s peanut butter sandwich with kitty litter?

My heart starts beating a little faster, knowing what’s waiting for me on the other side of this wall. My breath catches in my throat when I open the door and see her sitting there, staring up at me, and waiting.

Author Bio:

Tiffany Truitt was born in Peoria, Illinois. A self-proclaimed Navy brat, Tiffany spent most of her childhood living in Virginia, but don’t call her a Southerner. She also spent a few years living in Cuba. Since her time on the island of one McDonalds and Banana Rats (don’t ask), she has been obsessed with traveling. Tiffany recently added China to her list of travels (hello inspiration for a new book).

Besides traveling, Tiffany has always been an avid reader. The earliest books she remembers reading belong to The Little House on the Prairie Series. First book she read in one day? Little Woman (5th grade). First author she fell in love with? Jane Austen in middle school. Tiffany spent most of her high school and college career as a literary snob. She refused to read anything considered “low brow” or outside the “classics.”

Tiffany began teaching middle school in 2006. Her students introduced her to the wide, wonderful world of Young Adult literature. Today, Tiffany embraces popular Young Adult literature and uses it in her classroom.
